Nurturing Dreams: The Role of a Black Educator

I am overwhelmed with a deep, indescribable pride. Proud to be a light and a role model for the next generation. Proud of the precious experiences that life has gifted me—moments that have shaped and molded me, giving me the strength I possess today. Proud to be part of such a significant and vibrant community that allows me to live my dreams.

Over 30 years ago, I sat as a small, vulnerable child in my kindergarten, longing for a sister or a brother to stand by my side. I often felt alone and lost, surrounded by lighter-skinned children who made me feel different. I didn’t just want to belong; I yearned to be “normal”—to be free from the constant feeling of not fitting in, the painful awareness that I looked different.

Today, my heart overflows with joy and gratitude as I realize that, as a Black educator, I have the privilege of guiding a group of curious children under three years old on their journey through life. Among them are seven radiant children of African descent, their eyes shining with curiosity and hope.

“Their laughter, pure and unburdened, is like music that fills the air and warms the soul.” Yet deep inside, I also feel the pain I once carried—the pain of being different, the sadness of not being accepted. In these little hearts, I see the chance to create change, to build a bridge that connects what was once divided.

As they get to know one another, they experience the poignant beauty of diversity. They learn that their differences do not separate them but rather enrich their lives. I watch as they support each other, as they build a deep bond in their innocence that transcends nationalities. They are not just children—they are dreamers with the power to change the world.
