I am overwhelmed with a deep, indescribable pride. Proud to be a light and a role model for the next generation. Proud of the precious experiences that life has gifted me—moments that have shaped and molded me, giving me the strength I possess today. Proud to be part of such a significant and vibrant community that allows me to live my dreams.

Over 30 years ago, I sat as a small, vulnerable child in my kindergarten, longing for a sister or a brother to stand by my side. I often felt alone and lost, surrounded by lighter-skinned children who made me feel different. I didn’t just want to belong; I yearned to be “normal”—to be free from the constant feeling of not fitting in, the painful awareness that I looked different.

Today, my heart overflows with joy and gratitude as I realize that, as a Black educator, I have the privilege of guiding a group of curious children under three years old on their journey through life.
